Mail program slowdown

When I start up my mail program it take about two minutes to show the mail in my accounts, and then only about 30-40 emails from an account that should show over 700 and another account that should show over 1900. About 5-7 minutes later, the others appear. This obviously wreaks havoc with looking up older dated info. Any suggestions?
